As another year of writing goes by, it’s time to take stock, renew goals and prepare for a fresh new year. 2012 turned out to be a productive year for me. And also full of surprises, some achievements, some disappointments, and a lot of learning. But overall, more positive than negative.
Amazingly enough, I ended up finishing two and a half projects. The romance book project–which happened totally out of the blue when I was declared one of three winners of the Harlequin Mills & Boon Aspiring Authors contest–is done and dusted. Another writing project which was accomplished in 45 days flat was a screenplay that has been submitted to the Mumbai Mantra-Sundance Lab contest. Am awaiting news on that in the New Year as well. The co-writing project with Australian screenwriter Caz Adams has been completed with many, many, many rewrites and revisions. And yet another significant milestone: by the end of 2012, this blog approaches the 5000 views mark! So, yay!! 😀
One of the most significant learnings of the year has been: Stay positive and keep writing. The other has been on accepting feedback and using it to make my writing stronger. Even negative feedback — which can be totally debilitating for the morale — can be a strong incentive to improve your work. And perhaps the most important learning has been that if you fear something, just go right ahead and do it! Yes! The Mountain Dew ad with its pithy slogan — Darr ke aagey jeet hai! (Beyond fear is victory) — has got it so right! So, I overcame my terror of pitching and pitched my script to a production company executive. Sure, I need to practice it much more to get it ‘pitch perfect’ but hey… I crossed a psychological hurdle and it feels oh-so-great!
2013 promises to be full of action. And I’m looking forward to more writing, more pitching and more fear-busting moments.
How did your year go and what are your goals for 2013? Would love to hear from you all. Merry Christmas and a Happy, Fear-busting, Victorious 2013 everyone!
